The Stormers Way

The Stormers Way is the coaching philosophy that unites every team in our club.

It is not about making every coach the same. It is about ensuring every player experiences the same values, encouragement and approach to learning as they progress through Stormers.

One club. One philosophy. Different coaches, shared standards.

How We Coach

Inspire a Love of Basketball

Children who enjoy basketball are more likely to keep playing, practising and improving.

What this looks like:

  • Keep sessions energetic and enjoyable.
  • Bring back favourite games while adding enough variety to keep practice fresh.
  • Celebrate progress and improvement.
  • Finish practices positively.

Avoid:

  • Using fear or embarrassment as motivation.
  • Letting results define the experience.
  • Turning every session into a test.

"The greatest success is seeing children excited to come back next week."

Learn Through Play

Children learn best when they are active, engaged and making decisions.

What this looks like:

  • Keep activities short and active.
  • Use small-sided games and simple challenges.
  • Maximise movement, ball touches and decisions.
  • Allow players time to explore and solve problems.

Avoid:

  • Long explanations.
  • Long queues.
  • Stopping play too often.
  • Continuing after engagement has dropped.

"Children learn most when they move most."

Reinforce the Behaviours You Want

Children repeat behaviours that receive positive attention.

What this looks like:

  • Notice great effort.
  • Recognise encouragement and teamwork.
  • Praise trying something difficult.
  • Reinforce recovery after mistakes.
  • Notice players looking for teammates and space.

Avoid:

  • Praising only baskets, wins or natural talent.
  • Confusing a successful outcome with the behaviour that produced it.
  • Ignoring good effort because the attempt failed.
  • Using vague or insincere praise.

"We coach behaviours. Outcomes take care of themselves."

Include Everyone

Every player deserves to feel welcome, valued and involved.

What this looks like:

  • Learn every player’s name.
  • Rotate partners and groups.
  • Give every player meaningful opportunities to participate.
  • Adapt activities so different abilities can succeed.
  • Celebrate progress across the whole group.

Avoid:

  • Allowing a few players to dominate.
  • Leaving players isolated.
  • Using elimination games that create long periods of watching.
  • Comparing players with one another.

"Every player should leave feeling they belong."

Build Strong Foundations

Teach what players need now so they can succeed later.

What this looks like:

  • Keep learning appropriate to the age and stage.
  • Build confidence through achievable challenges.
  • Develop movement and basketball fundamentals gradually.
  • Revisit skills through varied activities.
  • Prepare players for the next stage of the Stormers pathway.

Avoid:

  • Rushing development.
  • Expecting technical perfection too early.
  • Teaching systems before players understand the game.
  • Specialising players into fixed positions too soon.

"Teach what players need next, not what helps win today."

Put Children Before Outcomes

Basketball outcomes matter, but children matter more.

What this looks like:

  • Prioritise learning and development over short-term results.
  • Be patient with different rates of progress.
  • Give every player appropriate challenge and opportunity.
  • Make decisions that support long-term development.

Avoid:

  • Favouring stronger players to improve a result.
  • Judging players only by current ability.
  • Sacrificing confidence or participation to win.
  • Letting the scoreboard determine how players are treated.

"The child is always more important than the scoreboard."

The Stormers Way in One Line

Inspire players to love basketball, help them learn through play, reinforce the behaviours that matter, include everyone, build strong foundations and always put children before outcomes.

How we coach matters as much as what we coach.
