Hi everyone,

I hope you are all keeping well.

Following our recent AGM, we wanted to share an update on where things stand with Galway Stormers and some of the plans for the season ahead.

First, a huge thank you to all of the players, parents, coaches, volunteers and committee members who helped make this past year possible. The club continues to grow, and it is brilliant to see so many young people in South Galway enjoying basketball, building confidence, making friends, and learning the value of teamwork.

Basketball is a fantastic sport for young people. It is played indoors, runs through the winter months, and gives children and teenagers a great outlet for fitness, friendship and competition at a time of year when many outdoor sports can be more difficult.

One of the key topics discussed at the AGM was the need for a proper home for basketball in South Galway. The lack of available facilities and limited training time for teams has made it clear that this is something the club needs to keep pushing forward. A lot of work is already happening behind the scenes to try and make this a reality.

In the meantime, the club is actively pursuing grants alongside the Community Centre to upgrade the current facilities and improve the playing experience for all of our kids. We are delighted to have moved back into Gort and are committed to working with the Community Centre and the wider community to make the most of the facilities we have while continuing to build toward something bigger for the future.

At the AGM, we also reviewed the registration rates for next year. The proposed rates for the coming season are:

120Euro/year

We have worked hard to keep the club as affordable as possible while also covering the real costs of hall rental, insurance, league registration, equipment, training, referees, and ongoing club development.

As the club grows, we also need more parent and community involvement. The club simply cannot run on coaches alone. We need volunteers in a number of areas, including:

Team managersScorekeepers and table officialsCoaches and assistant coachesSupport for playing teamsCommunity outreachFundraisingGeneral support at training sessions and matches

No basketball experience is needed for many of these roles. If you are willing to help, we will support you. Even a small amount of time can make a big difference.

We are also looking for volunteers to join a fundraising committee. This will be a really important part of helping us work toward a long-term home for basketball in South Galway. If we want to make that vision a reality, we will need support from across the club community.

There are also some exciting things coming for the new season. We will have new kits and a club shop set up, giving families the opportunity to order Galway Stormers gear directly. More details will follow once everything is ready.

We are also delighted to confirm that there will be a Summer Camp with Jason Killeen in August. This is a fantastic opportunity for players to learn, develop, and enjoy the game during the summer break. Further details on dates, times, age groups and registration will be shared shortly.

Finally, the Social Men’s Basketball group was a huge success last year, and we are delighted to say that Social Women’s Basketball will be added for next season. This is a great step for the club and another way to make basketball more accessible across the community.

The main message from the AGM is that Galway Stormers is in a strong position, but the next stage of growth will depend on the wider club community getting involved. This is a great opportunity to build something lasting for our young players and for the wider Gort and South Galway area.

Thank you again for your continued support. We will share further details on registration, training times, uniforms, summer camp, club shop and volunteer roles as soon as they are confirmed.

Best regards,

Brian Bourke

Director

Galway Stormers Basketball Club
