Version 1 Policy Document
Status: Version 1 for committee adoption and use by the South Galway Stormers Basketball Club. This document should be reviewed against current Basketball Ireland, Sport Ireland and legal requirements before adoption and during each review cycle.
Document owner: Club Committee / Coaching Lead (sgstormersbc@gmail.com) / Secretary (secretary.sgsbc@gmail.com)
Version: Version 1
Prepared for: South Galway Stormers Basketball Club
Version date: 14 July 2026
Review cycle: Annual or sooner if Basketball Ireland/Sport Ireland guidance changes
1. Purpose
This policy explains how South Galway Stormers Basketball Club approaches team placement, selection and playing time in a way that supports player development, fairness, communication and competitive integrity.
2. Development and Competitive Pathway
Cubs U8 and Academy U10 are coed development groups focused on fun, movement, confidence and fundamentals. Competitive teams begin at U12. The Club may adjust teams each season based on player numbers, age groups, league structures, coach availability and facility capacity.
3. Team Placement
Players are normally placed according to age group, ability, readiness, safety, maturity, commitment and available space. The Club may consider exceptions where appropriate and permitted by competition rules.
4. Selection Principles
Player welfare and development come first.
Coaches should be fair, consistent and transparent.
Attendance, effort, attitude, teamwork and coachability matter.
Selection should be appropriate to the player's age, confidence and ability.
The Club should avoid overloading players or placing them where they cannot safely participate.
5. Playing Time
Playing time will vary by age group, competition level, match context, attendance, effort, role, fitness, discipline and tactical needs. In development settings, coaches should aim to give all players meaningful participation. In competitive matches, equal playing time is not guaranteed, but coaches should avoid repeatedly excluding committed players without explanation or development support.
6. Communication with Parents and Players
Coaches should explain team expectations at the start of the season. Concerns about playing time or selection should be raised respectfully at an appropriate time, not during or immediately after a match unless there is a welfare issue.
7. Team Capacity and Waiting Lists
Where teams are full, the Club may operate a waiting list, suggest alternative sessions, seek more coaching capacity, or create additional groups where facilities and volunteers allow.
8. Moving Between Teams
Movement between age groups or teams may occur where appropriate for development, safety, league rules or team balance. Decisions should be made by the relevant coaches in consultation with the Coaching Lead (sgstormersbc@gmail.com) and Committee where needed.
9. Appeals or Concerns
Selection concerns should first be discussed with the coach or team manager. General team manager or coach contact may be routed through the Club Registrar (registrar.sgsbc@gmail.com). Unresolved concerns may be referred to the Coaching Lead (sgstormersbc@gmail.com) or Committee. Safeguarding or bullying concerns must follow the safeguarding or anti-bullying policy.
